Meet our Honoree: Christyn Foust
5 year-old Christyn Foust started experiencing swelling and pain after she had fallen off her bike in February of 2007. Her parents immediately made an appointment with their pediatrician who gave them three options: Juvenile Arthritis, Rheumatic fever or Lyme disease. Blood work was taken right away and they made an appointment with a pediatric rheumatologist, who confirmed the Juvenile Arthritis diagnosis.
Christyn’s condition worsened. She would need to be carried out of bed every morning. It hurt too much to walk. When she would have a flare up, she would just lay on her belly and kinda pull herself along with her arms. Her parent’s said it was almost as painful to watch as it was for her.
Additional joints were affected during each rheumatologist visit. Christyn started with Naproxen and then in June of '07, switched to Sulfasalazine, which she needs to go every 4 - 6 weeks to have blood work done. That's something no one enjoys, let alone a child.
Christyn is definitely making progress since she has been on the Sulfasalazine and her parents are hoping and praying that she will go into remission.
Her family has had to deal with lots of healthcare providers and they all have been so wonderful, so patient with them. Christyn’s experience has definitely been a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Christyn is a very tough little girl and that certainly has made a difference in fighting this disease. Please help Christyn in her fight for a cure by participating in the Jingle Bell Run event.
